The Staff Selection Commission (SSC) is an organization under the Government of India which recruits employees for various posts in various Ministries and Departments of the Government of India and subordinate offices.

The Commission is an attached office of the Department of Personnel and Training (DoPT) consisting of the Chairman, two members and a Secretary-cum-Controller of Examinations. His post is equivalent to the level of Additional Secretary to the Government of India.

The Estimates Committee in Parliament, in its 47th report (1967–68), recommended the formation of a Service Selection Commission to conduct examinations for recruitment to lower category posts. Later, on 4 November 1975, in the Department of Personnel and Administrative Reforms, the Government of India set up a Commission called the Subordinate Services Commission. On 26 September 1977, the Subordinate Services Commission was renamed as Staff Selection Commission. The functions of the Staff Selection Commission were redefined by the Government of India through the Ministry of Personnel, Public Grievances, and on 21 May 1999. Then the new constitution and work of the Staff Selection Commission (S.S.C.) came into effect from 1 June 1999. S.S.C. conducts joint graduate level examination to recruit non-gazetted officers in various government jobs.
